Item Details
Description
[PRINCESS HELENA]: (1846-1923) Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Small series of six A.Ls.S, Emily Loch, Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Helena, seventeen pages (total), 8vo, Cumberland Lodge, Windsor (5), and Pall Mall, London, July 1915 - November 1917, all to Alfred Mosely. Loch writes to her correspondent on behalf of the Princess, stating, in part, 'The Princess wishes me to forward you this private letter (no longer present) written to her by Georgina Countess of Dudley for you to read which she feels she can do as she regards you as such a good friend… you will see that the Colonial Officers are all desirous of going to the seaside or to Scotland as they are anxious to see as much as they can of this country during their convalescence. This being the case the Princess could not bear the idea that your most generous gifts should not be used to the greatest extent and thought you had better see exactly what the Red Cross does with regard to your house at Hadly Wood…' (9th July 1915), 'Her Royal Highness' present work is a local hospital that has been built by the War Office and Red X quite near here on Englefield Green… There is one great need and that is an ambulance… this is a worthy object for help and would contribute something towards it, the Princess would indeed be grateful…' (2nd August 1915), 'H.R.H. wishes me to say that in order that the Queen's consent may be obtained to use Princess Mary's name you must write to Her Majesty's Private Secretary G.W. Wallington Esq. and ask him to put the request before the Queen…' (12st August 1915), '…Princess Christian is much pleased and honoured that you will name your house as the Princess Christian Home for Nurses - H.R.H. values any connection with the nursing profession.' (24th August 1915), 'Princess Christian desires me to thank you for your letter and your kind expression of sympathy. Her Royal Highness values it all the more from you who know the same sorrow as herself…' (1st November 1917). Together with an A.L.S., Georgina Dudley, four pages, 8vo, Pall Mall, London, 13th July 1915, to Mr. Moseley, on the printed stationery of the British Red Cross. The Countess thanks her correspondent for his generous offer, '…of placing your house, West Lodge, Hadley Wood at the disposal of my department at the Red Cross for Conversant Officers either Colonials or others…' and continuing to invite Mr. Mosely to her offices to discuss matters further. All, except the letter dated 1st November 1917, accompanied by the original envelopes. With minor creases and very small tears to the folds, otherwise VG, 7
