CRIME FICTION: A good selection of A.Ls.S., T.Ls.S. etc., by various writers and novelists, most of them associated with works of Crime & Detective fiction as well as the genres of thrillers, espionage & mystery and also featuring a few Science Fiction, fantasy, ghost and horror writers, including E. Phillips Oppenheim, Gerard Fairlie (the inspiration for Bulldog Drummond), William Makin, Alexander Laing, Victor Canning (2), Garnett Radcliffe (3; one signed as Stephen Travers), Stephen Maddock, John Vandercook, Eric Ambler, John Leslie Palmer (A.L.S. as Francis Beeding, explaining in a postscript 'The use of the royal or editorial 'we' in this letter is due to the fact that Francis Beeding conceals the identity of two persons. This for international reasons cannot be revealed'; Palmer was co-author of The House of Dr. Edwardes which served as the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's film Spellbound), Edgar Jepson, James Morgan Walsh, Victor MacClure, Francis D. Grierson, Carroll John Daly (credited with writing the first work of hardboiled fiction with The False Burton Combs, 1922), Hugh Clevely, Leo Grex (2, one signed as Leonard Gribble; creator of Inspector Hornleigh), Algernon Blackwood, John Collier etc. All of the letters were sent to the English collector Eileen M.
