SOMMER, Giorgio. Adam D. Weinberg, The Photographs of Giorgio Sommer, Rochester, New York: Visual Studies Workshop, 1981. Softcover, 8 ¾ x 6 inches, 56 pages, 26 halftone illustrations, with ephemera. Signed.
This, the first monograph on the nineteenth-century Italian photographer, was Weinberg's master's thesis. Weinberg, who is now the director of New York's Whitney Museum of American Art, examines Sommer's German heritage, his studio's style, his casting business, and his costume and documentary photographs. He also includes a chronology and an index of Sommer's work in public collections. Giorgio Sommer (1934 -1914) was a leading photographer for the Italian tourist trade and was most known for his images of Naples and Pompeii. Laid in is a sheet listing twenty extra catalog entries and a card indicating this was a complimentary copy from the author. This copy signed by Weinberg. Fine condition.
