Description
GERMAN KPM PORCELAIN COMMUNION OR COMMEMORATION TANKARD, with raised ribbing on the sides, cover with acorn finial, polychrome ivy decoration, and gilding; dated May 7, 1842 and one side reading "Zur Erinnerung an den 7ten Mai 1842 [In Remembrance of May 7, 1842]" and the front reading "Starke Dich / noch oft daraus [May strength be with you or Strength to you hereafter]", possibly referencing the Hamburg fire and destruction of St. Peter’s Cathedral. Marked on base with red overglaze "KPM" beneath banded circle and cross and blue scepter. Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur (KPM), Berlin, Germany. Second or third quarter 19th century. 7" H. with cover, 5 3/4" to rim ,3 3/4" D.
Excellent undamaged condition.
Catalogue Note: Date and text possibly referencing a large fire that swept the city of Hamburg, Germany in May of 1842 and destroyed St. Peter’s Cathedral on the 7th of May. The tankard could have been made as a commemoration of the destruction and rebuilding of the cathedral in the 1840s, or perhaps in celebration of the completion of the spire on St. Peter’s, officially finished in the 1870s.
