Description
ANTONIO MILONE (ITALIAN, 1834-1919) PASTORAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING, oil on canvas, intended as a humorous composition featuring a donkey and young girl hauling hay while struggling to fend off a hungry group of goats attempting to eat their cargo, an angry farmer approaches, whip raised, in the distance, signed and dated "A. Milone / 65" lower right, on original stretchers. Housed in a period, possibly original, molded giltwood frame. Circa 1865. 29 1/2" x 39 1/2" sight, 38" x 48" OA.
Painting dirty and in need of cleaning, minor to moderate areas of craquelure, stretcher bar marks visible, scattered abrasion, small tear and puncture at lower edge. Frame with wear and losses.
Provenance: Descended in the family of David Dunlop, Jr. (1841-1902), grandson of noteworthy Petersburg, VA tobacco merchant, David Dunlop, Sr. (1804-1864), said to have been purchased on a grand tour of Europe after the Civil War.
