Description
FRANCOIS FLAMENG (FRENCH, 1856-1923) LE MATIN POSTER, lithograph in colors, an iconic image from the Art Nouveau period, allegorical in nature, the figure likely intended to personify the light of truth (in all its naked glory) being offered to the people by the press, specifically Le Matin, a French daily newspaper in publication from 1884-1944, signed in image lower right and marked "IMP. BOUGEREIE & Cie PARIS" at lower edge. Housed in a modern frame. Late 19th/early 20th century. 79 1/2" x 47 1/2" sight, 85 1/2" x 53 1/2" OA.
Poster with even toning, some fading, numerous scattered tears and small losses throughout, now backed with linen. Frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
Catalogue Note: Francois Flameng (1856-1923) was a very successful French artist working in the fourth quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. A friend of John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925), the leading portrait painter of the era, Flameng worked in a similar style to great effect. Highly sought after, Flameng painted portraits of many of the society's elite, including royalty, and his work is represented today in numerous prestigious institutions around the world. The present work, impressive in scale, demonstrates the artist's fine abilities as a designer and illustrator.
