Description
EMILIO VILA (SPANISH, 1887-1967) BATSCHARI CIGARETTES POSTER, lithograph in colors, an engaging, stylized image from the Art Deco period featuring an elegant lady seated on the arm of an upholstered chair while smoking a cigarette, the smoke fantastically collecting in the air above her to spell "BATSCHARI", signed "Vila" in image lower right, marked "Creation 1925 des Imprimeries / Joseph-Charles / Paris" in left margin and "A. BATSCHARI CIGARETTES, MANUFACTORY THE HAGUE" in lower margin. Housed in a modern frame. Circa 1925. 49 1/4" x 34 1/4" sight, 52 1/2" x 37 1/2" OA.
Very good visual condition retaining vivid coloration, some minor toning and inconspicuous areas of foxing/discoloration, light fold lines. Possible minor areas of professional restoration to paper at fold lines, lower left and right margins, figure's neck and cheek. Not examined out of frame.
Catalogue Note: Born in Llagostera in the Catalonia region of Spain, Emilio Vila (1887-1967) studied as a young man in Barcelona, but moved to Paris in the 1910's to escape the civil strife affecting his native land. Vila's early experiences in Paris with fellow artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso were especially formative for him, and it was in France that his mature style fully developed. The present work, produced during this period when the artist was at the height of his powers, clearly demonstrates Vila's exceptional abilities as a designer.
