This is an excellent historic and important Missouri War Axe Tomahawk collector from the Lakota Sioux at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The exceptional tomahawk war club dates to circa 1840-1850. This was displayed at the Frontier Museum in Williston, North Dakota. The piece shows a hand forged iron head with simple weeping heart cutout in the center of the blade and remnants of an old trade clothe gasket still present. The tomahawk has a hardwood hickory haft adorned with a long wrap of old tarnished wire and brass trade tacks (with an anti-corrosion agent being added to the wrap for preservation purposes). The bottom of the haft shows a drop of three turkey feathers with old brass beads and a tarnished thimble tied onto the bottom (these feathers modernly replaced the original five Swainson Hawk feathers, the tomahawk was pictured in both books with the original hawk feathers, but they were required to be replaced due to legal reasons). The piece is pictured in the 2009 publication/book “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” by Mark Francis, page 122 figure 193; and “The Missouri War Axe: War Tomahawks of the Plains and Prairies” (2010) by Mark Francis, page 54 figure 63.
