c. 1706-1708, Original Map of North & South America, titled “America or the New World, first discovered and sailed by C. Columbus in the year 1492,” Choice Extremely Fine.
This vivid, highly attractive original Map originates from “accurate accounts of memorable sea and land voyages, to the East and West Indies and other regions, first discovering by different nations, mostly Kings of companies send there; since 1492-1499.” Measuring about 9.4” x 6.7” with the Map image being 8.7” x 6.1” on high quality period handmade laid paper. This particular Map is from part of this book: “The famous sea-voyage of Christoffel Columbus; First done by him in 1492, for the Catholic Majesties, as sea Admiral, for the discovery of the West-Indian landscapes.” Published by Dutch map artist Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733). Original folds as issued and laid down upon a larger sheet for preservation and display. A very bold and visually stunning Map with insets at the upper left and lower left corner areas. Image of Columbus and two Cherubs with period navigation and other instruments nicely presented within the upper vignette. California presented as an Island. A lovely, vibrant and highly visual Map with alot going for it, including great eye appeal.
