1889 Benjamin Harrison Framed Campaign Textile Display Celebrating the Inaugural Centennial of the First President
1889 Benjamin Harrison Presidential Campaign Textile with Jugate Portrait of Harrison & Washington, Framed, Very Fine.
Design is similar to item listed as number 676 on page 284 in Collins’ “ Threads of History” published by the Smithsonian. The Textile measures 23.75” x 21.75” in brown, red, white and blue designs, printed on one side of a cotton panel, trimmed for the design, folded and hemmed along the edges. This example has been trimmed and hemmed and mounted in a painted wooden display frame to fully 33.75” x 30”. The design featuring a large bust Jugate Portraits circled by laurel wreaths of George Washington and Benjamin Harrison. Washington’s portrait has the year “1789” printed above his head; Harrison’s has the year “1889” above which would be celebrating the Inaugural Centennial of the First President. The rest of the print features a American Heraldic Eagle perched on a red, white and blue shield, and two versions of the American Flag, 1789 and 1889. Lightly tone and overall quite attractive! We previously sold a complete example as Lot #550 in our August 23, 2003 Auction where it brought $920. Threads of History also shows an example where two of these items have been sewn together to create a patriotic apron, also shown on page 284. Ready to hang upon display.
