Japanese Bronze Keman Buddhist Temple Hanging, 19th C

Description

19th century Japanese gilded bronze keman in a shape of a rounded fan (uchiwa) with pierced decoration of flowering peonies and an elaborate knot. Hanging pendants representing the Wheel of the Buddhist Law, jars with treasure, lotus, peonies and water lillies, old glass beads. Keman (from the Sanskrit kusumam?l? "Garland of Flowers") is a Buddhist decoration hanging on a beam of the inner sanctuary in front of enshrined Buddha in the main hall of a temple. Beautiful crisp work, superb quality gilding, swinging loop for hanging on the top, tiny areas of green incrustation on some pendants (usually caused by dripping wax), great patina. Some of the wires holding pendants have been replaced recently. Wonderful devotional object with serious presence. Total height from the top of the loop to the end of the longest pendant 11 1/4 inches, width 6 1/8 inches.
