"Calliope", ca. 1900

carved marble of various types with incised patterns and designs
the muse of epic poetry presented with her attributes of a lyre in one hand and bay leaf laurel in the other, signed and inscribed "E. Battiglia/Firenze" at back of integral marble base.

Other Notes: Working in marble and alabaster, Battiglia created accomplished decorative sculptures and copies of antique statuary for the tourist market from his studio in Florence. Condition
The sculpture exhibits numerous repairs, many of which are not easily visible due to the variegated marble medium. The harp has been repaired in three places with some gold "retouched" overpainting. The figure's proper right forearm near the elbow has been repaired. The thumb on the right hand is lacking and the other four fingers have been repaired.
