Roman Republic, Fonteius, ca. 114 to 113 BCE. AR denarius (3.4 g) Obverse: Janiform head of Dioscur, S and star on either side. Reverse: Galley with pilot and rowers. RRC 290/1; Sydenham 555; Fonteia 1. Size: .8" W (2 cm)
The Fonteia were a plebeian family in Rome, described by Cicero in his oration the Pro Fonteio. They claimed descent from Fontus, the son of Janus, hence the appearance of the god on their coinage.
