Description
An extremely rare Ming Dynasty Tianqi period under glaze polychrome jar decorated with mountain and river scene. This earliest under glaze polychrome uses predominantly brown undergalze color and trace amount of underglaze blue and green. Underglaze decorations have the advantage of being durable, unlike over glaze famille rose that can be worn off. The painting is very free-flowing and roust, which was a common style during late Ming, as evidenced in the paintings of Ba Da Sun Len, etc. (Dr. Robert I-San Lin’s Collection of Important Chinese Arts, brought to California in 1960s). Height 5 in.
