Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 800-1200 CE. A jaguar metate carved from volcanic stone with refined dimensions and intricate incised details. Note the details on the head - those gnashing teeth, alert ears, and snarling snout - the wonderful diamond motif on the head and curling tail, not to mention the beautiful interlocking stair motif around the platform. Would have been used to grind hallucinogenic substances, medicines, etc. likely for ceremonial rituals. 13.00"L x 4.50"W x 5.50"H (33.02 L x 11.43 W x 13.97 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Private collection, Denver, CO. Ex-Arte Primitivo
