Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, earliest horizon, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. Who (or shall I say Hoo Hoo) doesn't love owls? This abstract depiction of the wise bird is carved from a shell of rich red and cream hues with boldly cut lines to delineate its characteristic large eyes and beak as well as winged body. The owl is a nocturnal bird that various Pre-Columbian cultures associated with earth, darkness, death, and the underworld. While some may be familiar with Valdivian stone palettes depicting owls, this shell votive is a very rare example! Custom stand. Size: 2.75" W x 4.25" H (7 cm x 10.8 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on stand
The ancient Valdivia culture of Ecuador was initially discovered by archaeologist Emilio Estrada in 1956, fairly recently in historic terms, and it is regarded as one of the oldest cultures of the ancient Americas. Interestingly, this culture still poses a bit of a mystery to scholars as no finite end to this culture has been identified yet; what's more, no sign of a cultural migration has surfaced. Most plausible is that the population somehow dwindled inspiring members of the communities to leave their settlements in search of opportunities elsewhere.
Provenance: Ex- Collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, CA
