Greece, Lucania, Velia, ca. 300 to 280 BCE. AR didrachm, (7.47 g) Obv: Helmeted head of Athena facing right. Rev: Lion standing to right, star above. Wonderfully toned obverse. McClean 1460. Size: .75" W (1.9 cm)

Velia is the Roman name of an ancient city of Magna Graecia - a Greek colony - on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the southwestern coast of modern day Italy. The city was home to the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno of Elea.
