Description
Two 18th century mahogany Chippendale chairs. 1st item: Chippendale New England mahogany armchair, straight crest rail with linen curled ears, pierced splat, curved carved arms, slip seat, shaped skirt, Marlboro front legs and tapered back legs, all attached with cross stretchers, mortise and tenon side rails, 35 1/2" H x 28 1/2" arm width x 22 1/2" overall depth. 18 1/4" seat depth. Circa 1780. 2nd item: Chippendale mid-Atlantic mahogany side chair, shaped crest rail, pierced scroll splat, front acanthus carved cabriole legs with pad feet and rear round tapered legs, 37 1/4" H x 24" W overall x 20 1/2" D overall. 15 1/2" x 21 1/2" seat overall. Condition
1st item: Inner stretcher replaced and repair to slipper seat support rails. Piecing and repairs to both arms. Possible loss of height to feet. 2nd item: Missing back seat supports. Small breaks and losses to front seat corners. Old split to back right ear rail. Left rear seat bracket is loose. Old piecing/restoration of all four feet (approximate height 3-1/2" at front feet and 201/2" at back feet), probably in late 19th/early 20th c.
