Description
Original Antique Maritime Ink & Watercolor Painting; Patriotic depiction of the SS Uncle Sam with nautical and United States Flags. Finely executed details include passengers with umbrellas and top hats, cargo storage, and more. Period ink identification at bottom reads; "A Yankee Streamer - 'Champion of the Seas.' - 9th. October, 1858." Research indicates that the SS Uncle Sam was built in 1852 by Perrine, Patterson, and Stack of Williamsburgh, New York. The SS Uncle Sam passed through several owners and the 1858 date at the bottom of the work suggests this was created when she was owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Painting is on paper which is about 7-3/8" x 4-5/8"--an easily frameable size for display.
