AN ANTIQUE MEXICAN REVOLUTION EX VOTO RETABLO OR LÁMINA OIL PAINTING ON TIN, 1920, PROBABLY GUANAJANTO, two workers kneel with long candles giving thanks to St. Andrew, appearing in a cloud above them, for their protection during violence in their city, while a barely visible prison cell with two detained men inside to the right of the image; the partial words "Carcel Mun..." identify their experience in a jail, and a prayer is written below, "En el ano de 1915 mas encontramos en peligro de muerte por habernos cogido el Gobierno y Aien grand afliccion mi madre Maria Martinez aclami al Sr. St Andres (sic) de esta Cuidad quien ojo(sic) suplica y mas sabro...mento de 20...de 1920/In the year 1915 we found ourselves in danger of death for having tried to sieze(attack) the government, and notwithstanding great affliction my mother Mary Martinez made an offering to the Saint Andrew (who was) of this city, who heard her prayer and saved us, 1920." The back with a handwritten paper translation. Height: `10" Width: 7" NOTE: From approximately 1910-1920 Mexico experienced a tumultuous civil war. Mexican Revolutionaries lead by Pancho Villa of the north, allied with Emilio Zapata of the south, to fight for improvements to agrarian life. Contention between the ruling class and lower class erupted into a particularly bloody period of armed civil war with the Constitutionalist leader in power, Venustiano Carranza. In 1915 the Battle of Celaya, April 6-15 occurred followed by various bloody battles for the rest of this year. Provenance: Estate of the late Charles A. and Betti F. Saunders, Houston, Texas.
Condition
There are a few areas of flea sized paint chip losses and some soil to the surface but otherwise in very good condition commensurate with age.
