Description
Ketubah recording the marriage of the groom Yosef ben Yehuda Pincherle with the bride Rachel bat Yitzchak Pincherle. Ceneda, (today Vittorio Veneto), Italy, Nissan, 1774.
Handwritten on parchment, (with cut margins), decorated with multicolored vegetal decorations and rocailles typical of the period. The top of the ketubah is decorated with a large medallion containing an unusual illustration of Jonah emerging from the jaws of the fish.
The ketubah mentions that the home of Yitzchak Pincherle is in Gorizia. It is signed by the witnesses Yitzchak ben Moshe Luzzato and Benjamin ben Yosef Tarbam, and by the groom.
The interior of the Vittorio Veneto synagogue, which served the local Ashkenazic community for over 200 years, was transferred in its entirety to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 1965. Among the accoutrements of the synagogue a silver Torah crown was found bearing an inscription from 1836 in memory of Chizkiya Yosef ben Shimshon Pincherle.
Only two other ketubot from Ceneda are known; one from 1781 and one from 1790.
See: Encyclopedia Judaica, 1971, vol. 10, color plate 9, col. 940.
64X52 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and fold lines. Several tears and holes in the margins. Slight damage to paint and ink. Remainders of adhesive tape on the reverse.
