Vintage hand puppet of Walt Disney’s Dumbo the Elephant produced by Gund. Gund, a German immigrant, was a manufacturer of plush stuffed animals and founded the business in 1898. Located in Norwalk, Connecticut, he is responsible for many of the industry standards of today for safety and manufacturing processes. Sweldin bought the company in 1925, when Gund retired. They became the first licensor of cartoon characters and produced many plush toy versions of Walt Disney characters. The Walt Disney movie Dumbo premiered in 1941 and became one of Disney’s most popular characters, which was later transformed by Gund, into this fabric hand puppet. The puppet is in good condition overall, with no rips or tears or staining to the cloth gown. The felt hands have some light discoloration due to the age and usage as a children’s toy. The head is made of rubber and is in excellent condition with no loss of paint and the colors are still strong and vibrant. This puppet still has the original manufacturers tag attached to the gown. The puppet measures approximately 9” high and 9” across.
