Description
Signed Mutare Serpentine Shona Sculpture By Nevison Solomon - This piece is a Shona sculpture carved from Mutare Serpentine by Nevison Solomon. Zimbabwe stone sculpture is often called Shona sculpture, and is contemporary stone sculpture named after the tribe of most of the sculptors. This piece seems to depict a child, wrapped up in grandmother's shawl, or Mbereko ("outside womb"). Many African children's earliest memories include being swaddled in a shawl and carried on their mother's backs until age two. After age two, memories often include visions of their grandmother standing vigilant, dutifully watching over the family and keeping them from harm. The grandmother holds a place of great esteem in the tribal family and is deeply revered for teaching the children all the traditions, manners and folklore that sustain their long-lived culture. This beautiful piece measures 11"H x 7"W (at the widest point). The sculpture is signed by the artist on the back, bottom of the piece.
