This lot consists of the volume "Memoires sur La Guerre" (The Hague: Chez Pierre Gosse, 1738).

This volume includes memoirs of Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (called simply Turenne), as well as additional memoirs from other writers, concerning "the war" and military hospitals. The work is split into two parts, both of which are bound into this volume.

The war in question is the Dutch War of 1672. This war was part of the Dutch Rampjaar, or "disaster year," which saw the Dutch Republic simultaneously attacked by England, France, and the prince-bishops Bernhard von Galen, bishop of Munster, and Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, archbishop of Cologne (Wikipedia).

This antique volume is bound in full leather, with gilt-embellished and gilt-lettered spine. Adorning the interior are engraved headpieces and historiated initials, as well as a number of folding charts.

This antique volume shows external wear, with faint cracking to the spine and spine edges, minor rubbing to the covers, and faint moisture markings to the front cover. The front hinge is cracking. A previous owner's signature and ink smudge appear on the title page. The interior displays minor scattered foxing, with minor rippling and creasing to the pages. The folding charts are generally well-preserved, showing only minor foxing and soiling. One or two very small insect holes are present.
