Description
The generous spinach-green jade carved in shape of a caparisoned standing figure of an elephant, with jade tusks, with its hump covered with gilt bronze enameled cloisonne work blanket carrying GU shape vase with an inverted neck and flared rim candle holder on its back on the howda, with three tall celadon jade halberd spears.
The elephant is sometimes shown carrying a "treasure" vase (bao ping) on its back. Since the word "vase" (ping) has the same pronunciation as the word for "peace" (Ping'an), the implied meaning is "may you have 'good luck' (elephant) and 'peace' (vase)".
A portion of this high-grade green Jade is considered quite rare. The spinach-green jade shows dark-green color, with sporadic grayish hue strike lines of natural inclusions. The composition is sophisticated and the Jade colors and vivid cloisonne works are simply a feast for the eye. Elegantly presented upon semi-octagonal cloisonne pedestal stands.
Dimension (Jade): 609.6mm H x 330.2mm L x 127mm W (Stand): 10" H x 16" L x 9" D
Weight (Jade): 14.2kgThe halberd is a type of spear that is sometimes used symbolically in paintings. This is because ji can also mean ? j? ‘opportunity’ and ? jí ‘grade; rank’ and so expresses the wish for luck particularly in examinations.
