Item Details
Description
Unusual Glazed Redware Inkstand, American, possibly Midwestern origin, Dated 1870, slab-constructed inkstand with scalloped carving to top and base, the surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Includes original lead-and-manganese glazed inkwell and sander. Area between well and sander incised with the date, "1870". This inkstand was found with two later Albany-slip-glazed stoneware miniatures: a bucket with metal handle and a jug, both of probably Midwestern origin. The region of origin of the inkstand itself is unknown, although the collector, being from the Midwest, acquired most of his pieces locally. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, collected by the father of the consignor. Inkstand with loss to corner, otherwise typical wear to edges and openings for well and sander. Small chips to inkwell. Sander broken into two pieces with reglued section to top and missing pieces around midsection. Two Albany-slip-glazed miniatures in excellent condition. L 8 3/8" ; H 4 1/4".
