Description
Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "III", Southern U.S. origin, second or third quarter 19th century, rotund jar with flared collar, semi-squared rim molding, and applied tab handles, the surface covered in a mottled green and brown alkaline glaze. Incised on top of one handle with three diagonal slash marks. On the corresponding side of the jar, the glaze was scraped away prior to the firing to reveal three vertical slashes on unglazed clay. A similar, less-defined treatment appears on the underside. Whether these base and underside slash marks are intentional or coincidental is unknown. Provenance: Recently found in Texas. Wear to rim. Small flakes to surface, more visible on one side. Wear and a 1" shallow chip to one handle. Shallow chipping along edge of opposite handle. H 10".
