Description

A fascinating carved wooden mask representing a Pig, with a wooden mask face with long snout and pig ears, metal tacks, accented with a red organic pigment and adorned with a textile headdress. This mask is known as a "Mwana Ngulu" and would intervene during the initiation of the young boys ceremony known as the "Mukanda". The ngulu mask is the most common of the zoomorphic masks. The Ngulu is characterized by an erratic, vulgar behavior that contrasts sharply with that of Pwo, The ideal woman mask. From the Chokwe peoples, Angola, Africa. The mask itself measures 14 x 8.5 inches, 18 inches tall when on display stand.
