Description
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887), "Orpheus"-1863, patinated bronze, signed to base under figure's left "A. Carrier". Figural sculpture depicting Orpheus, Greek musician, prophet and poet best known for his charm and charisma; he is portrayed here in contemplation with lyre in hand. Overall approximately 19" x 24". Provenance: from a private New York collection, whereby acquired by present owner. Reference: "The Romantics to Rodin: French Nineteenth-Century Sculpture from North American Collections". Los Angeles County Museum of Art (January 1, 1980). PP. 161-163. Note: Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a founding member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (French, founded 1862) and an officer of the Legion of Honour (French, founded 1802).
