Description
Charles C. Stadden (English, b.1919), fourth quarter 20th century. A limited edition custom military chess set comprising a mahogany rectangular box, the removable lid with central brass plaque inscribed "THE MILITARY CHESS SET OF THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES CIRCA 1863" and an applied paper chess board en verso, the interior of box fitted for the 32 hand painted pewter playing pieces including primary figures Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Custer, Grant, Sherman, McClellan, Jackson, Longstreet Stuart and other notables with the pawns represented by members of the 2nd Wis. Iron Brigade and Wheats Louisiana Tigers. All pieces are set on marble plinths and the undersides with green felt also inscribed. Tallest pieces approximately 5" in height. An additional brass engraved plaque "THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES/A MILITARY CHESS SET/MADE TO THE ORDER OF/F. MITCHEAL ROGERS/NO.11 IN AN EDITION OF 1000". Approximate height of box 4.75", width 26.37", depth 21.5".
Condition
Fitted interior with felt disintegrating. Glued down playing board with ripped edges and some bubbling. Box with scratches and loss to finish. One figure missing top of element and one figure is bent musket.
