Item Details
Description
New World, Spanish Colonial/Mexican, ca. 19th century CE. An interesting hand-carved wooden santo of a standing Virgin Mary, well-carved, brightly painted, and outfitted with numerous accessories. Size: 5.25" L x 6.75" W x 21.25" H (13.3 cm x 17.1 cm x 54 cm); 21.25 (54 cm) inches tall with the crown on the head.

Mary's gaze is straight forward and she stands with one arm raised, palm out and the other raised to grasp something. She holds a book and a quill, not common symbols associated with Mary. However, she is dressed in cream and gold, with a royal blue and dark red cloak, and stands atop a cloud with cherubs - the common depiction of the Madonna in Glory, adored by the angels and bathed in heavenly light. She also has a large, hammered tin crown and her neck is draped with a set of rosary beads. She stands atop a green and gold multi-tiered pedestal. It seems likely that worshippers added several of these elements to the original figure of Mary - the hand with the book, for example, has been replaced and may be from a figure of St Teresa of Avila, who was often shown with a book and quill. The clothing and setting of the figure, however, are unmistakably Mary. The revisions to this figure emphasize how well-loved santos could be, and how their worship over time meant that they could be dynamic and changing rather than static pieces of art.

Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities.
