19th c. American School- James and Emma Paton- 2 oils on canvas mounted to masonite, ca. 1860, varnish yellowed, surface grime. 26 1/2 x 22 1/4''James Paton was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1832. He married Emma Atkins in Cleveland (Newburgh Twp.) in 1859. She was born in Northampton, England, in 1835. They lived 192 Sawtell Ave (now E. 51st Street). They had seven children, one of which was the consignor's grandmother, Emma Paton Sparrow. James was superintendent of the Cleveland Rolling Mills (later part of US Steel) and was subsequently associated with the Crescent Tin Plate Company and the National Safe and Lock Company. He helped build the Emma blast furnace for Cleveland Rolling Mills in Newburgh.James Paton died June 27, 1904, and Emma died February 6, 1910. They are buried in Woodland Cemetery.
