Rare Smallest Size Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal
1837-Dated Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal. First Original Reverse. 51mm. Third & Rare Smallest Size. Struck in Bronzed Copper. Julian IP-19b. Gem Mint State.
51mm. Julian IP-19b. Belden-34. This is the rarest Smallest, so-called “Third Size” Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal, which is elusive and much rarer than the larger sized Bronze strikings. Rich Hartzog’s 1986 supplement and price guide for Julian’s “Medals of the United States Mint” notes that only (5) prior sales of the small size bronze medal could be found over the past 150 years. This particular piece has lovely semi-prooflike fields on both sides, beneath rich natural mahogany-brown toning. This wonderful medal has sharp high wire rims on both the obverse and reverse edges. There are a few tiny nicks and trivial hairlines of very minor consequence keeping is from superb. A rarity and highly important example of the series. This elusive First Original Reverse, 51 mm Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal is lacking in most collections.
