Indian Peace Medals
1881 Oval President James A. Garfield Indian Peace Medal
1881 James A. Garfield Oval Indian Peace Medal. Struck in Bronze at the United States Mint. Julian IP-44. Choice Mint State.
Julian IP-44. Oval 76mm x 59mm (about 2.25” x 3”). Struck at the United States Mint at Philadelphia. This example has gorgeous natural chestnut-brown colors. This major type is very popular because of its rare oval shape and the fact that Garfield was assassinated, thereby adding an air of popularity and scarcity. This medal is in Mint condition with a few ticks and ultra-fine well-hidden hairlines on the obverse behind the head, yet the overall eye appeal is excellent. This is only the second original example we’ve offered of this important Oval design Indian Peace Medal since we began keeping database records. We offered the first in our EAHA Auction of August 25, 2001, Lot 1536, graded About Uncirculated which sold a decade and a half ago for $2,530. In his 1986 Price Guide, Hartzog lists only 3 records for the copper version of this medal, confirming its great rarity. All details are sharp and distinct. A lovely specimen for display and the finest quality 1881 Oval President James A. Garfield Indian Peace Medal we have offered.
