50 Cents U.S. Postage Stamp Envelope (PE), Unknown Maker, (Likely T.R. Dawley. Fr. PE-UNLISTED), M. Friedberg #185A, #KL-159-50, “50 cts.”, on Light Green Wove Paper, Complete Envelope lacking its top flap, Choice Very Fine.
This very Plated Envelope is photographed being used for illustrating Friedberg reference book number PE819 on page 249 in “PAPER MONEY of the UNITED STATES.” This example having black printed text on a pale green wove paper envelope, its text reading: “U.S. / Postage Stamps / 50 cts.”. Envelope is complete except for lacking the top flap that would have held the critical “Dawley” maker imprint information which was not known when listed in Friedberg. This piece appears identical in style and design to the “Dawley” listing for PE257 a 50 Cents denomination being on “Yellow” wove paper, while this current example is on a light green wove paper. That identical light green paper is stated for PE255 which is shown illustrated and a 30 Cents denomination. Therefore we believe this to be a likely Unique new sub-variety! We will leave the final decision as to the revised catalog number to the editors of the forthcoming next edition of the Friedberg book.
