KARL WALLENDA (1905-1978). German-American High Wire Artist and founder of The Flying Wallendas, a daredevil circus act.
Exceptional Inscribed & Signed Photograph, “Karl Wallenda” measuring 8” x 10”, black & white, no date, featuring the Flying Wallendas (Helen, Karl, Herman and Joe) performing one of their astounding feats of balance on the high-wire, Choice Very Fine. Inscribed in rich blue ink in German, “Mit besten wünschen, für unseren Freund, zur Erinnerung, Karl Wallenda” (With best wishes, for our friend, a memento, Karl Wallenda).
Karl Wallenda was the founder of the Great Wallendas, an internationally known daredevil circus act famous for performing death-defying stunts without a safety net. Known throughout Europe for their four-man pyramid and cycling on the high wire, the act moved to the United States in 1928 and began an association with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Karl Wallenda was the founder of the Great Wallendas, an internationally known daredevil circus act famous for performing death-defying stunts without a safety net. Known throughout Europe for their four-man pyramid and cycling on the high wire, the act moved to the United States in 1928 and began an association with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
In 1947 they developed the unequaled three-tier seven-man pyramid. Tragedy, however, was not unknown to the troupe. On January 30, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, Wallenda's son-in-law Richard Faughnan and nephew Dieter Schepp were killed and an adopted son Mario was paralyzed from the waist down when the pyramid collapsed. Wallenda's sister-in-law Rietta fell to her death in 1963, and his son-in-law Richard ("Chico") Guzman was killed in 1972 after touching a live wire in the rigging.
Karl himself, who at age 73 attempted a walk between two hotels in San Juan, Puerto Rico on a wire stretched 125 feet above the pavement, fell to his death when winds exceeded 30 miles per hour.
