Reverend “George B. Cheever” Impassioned Slavery Quote
REVEREND GEORGE B. CHEEVER (1807-1890). Historic American Abolitionist, Minister and Poet.
July 9, 1860-Dated Civil War period, Autograph Quotation Signed, “George B. Cheever,” 1 page, measuring 6.75” x 8.75”, Octavo, from New York, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. Here, Reverend George B. Cheever pens a long, impassioned quotation on the plight of Slavery. Exceptionally beautiful and bright, perfect for display. Cheever pens, in full:
"How true and beautiful and noble is the preceding sentiment! And in the same way it may be safely asserted that it is a greater privilege to live at such a day and in such a country as ours, and be thrown into the midst of such a dreadful conflict against the slavery of an outcast
downtrodden race, and to endure reproach, and suffering if need be, on their behalf, and for their deliverance that to have been born in the most peaceful country and carried through life in the bosom of the happiest race ever known on earth. Certainly, if we look to the Savior, and draw our inspiration and our life in the sacred cause from Him, we have presented so as in the most natural and legitimate way (and not without great compensations for our trials by the way) the benediction of Christ through the Apostle, to the few and faithful early disciples. For unto you it is given, on the behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for his sake. --- (Signed) George B. Cheever, -- New York, July 9, 1860."
