Description
Monroe, James (5th President of the United States.) Dueling flintlock pistol case, with engraved brass cartouche bearing the initials of Monroe. 16.75" x 9.25" x 2.5". Brass key-hole and hinges, key not present though lock is opened. Boxed lined in red velvet, with various compartments including two with lids. Pistols absent but retaining many of the other components: Powder flask, ram-rod, spare flints, linen wads, lead balls (measuring .50 caliber), and two lead-ball molds. No makers markings though the layout of the case and lock closely resemble that of gun-maker John Manton. Upper lid with crack along grain, pressure marks and abrasions to velvet lining. ****************************************************** From the Hoes estate. Laurence Gouvenour Hoes was founder of the Monroe Museum and Historical Library and great-great-grandson of James Monroe. Upon the death of Laurence, the box then passed to Monroe Randall Hoes. Monroe Randall Hoes and his wife Mary Alice Regier Hoes held various items of James Monroe's, many of which were donated to the James Monroe Museum. Box also accompanied by two letter openers which were housed in the case.
