Description
THE HOLY BIBLE, CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS… London: Baskett, 1759. [Bound With] THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER…TOGETHER WITH THE … PSLAMS OF DAVID. London: Baskett, 1760. 15.25" x 10.5". Wanting New Testament title leaf and a couple of other leaves (likely blanks, text continuous.) Period paneled calf with label in gilt to front board, "For the use of the meeting." Boards detached, leather dry, cracking, and chipped with loss. Contents well-used, some foxing and toning throughout, several closed tears and some marginal chipping, 4 leaves with tape repairs and chips removing text (primarily marginal footnotes though a few verses also lost), various stains including some small water-stains and ink-stains, several leaves with margins cut away, text-block block cracked, many leaves detached toward back. Poor to Fair overall. ******************************** Front endpaper with manuscript note laid on, reading, "The first Bible used in the first church on the island of Nantucket" and with 18th c. label in gilt to front board reading, "For the use of the meeting." Large silk bookmarker laid in at front. Small meeting houses on Nantucket pre-date this Bible by several decades, and the specific church or meeting house to which this belonged in unclear inasmuch as "church" may be defined as a body of believers as much as a physical structure. In the early 1700s, believers in Nantucket would meet in small groups, in homes, and most of the physical churches would be constructed in the 19th century.
