Description
1821 EARLY BIBLE Lancaster Pennsylvania American German Luther Dutch Johann Bar
A rare, early 19th-century Martin Luther German New Testament Bible printed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Luther Bibles have always maintained their popularity throughout the centuries both in German and non-German speaking areas.
Throughout the early 19th-century, there was a boom in growth of the Pennsylvania Dutch (or Germans) immigrants which spawned the need for German Bibles. Johann Bär (or Bear) was the only printer in Lancaster County to print the Bible in that era. Bär intended to make his ‘Biblia’ the largest German-language Bible in America when it was first printed. A feat he hoped would impress the rest of the Pennsylvania Dutch community.
This 1821 New Testament was the first time the New Testament had been printed by itself by Bär.
