Description
This is a very fine old carved wooden Female ancestor sculpture from the Senou region of Mali, West Africa and the Dogon peoples. The sculpture features a very tall elegant female form with incised and raised scar patterns and shown seated on a stool supported by three legs. Figures such as this belong to female societies and were used for the education of young girls. They were displayed at funerals and presumably on certain fertility and rain-making rituals as well. According to H. Leloup they were called "so-ma-so" ("listen to me"), and were associated with education and with prayers for fertility.Measures 28.5 inches on wooden base.
