Description
China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A mythical ceramic chimera known as a qilin with dragon wings and ears, hooves, a canine body, a dramatic visage comprised of expressive eyes, flared nostrils, and full, almost human lips, as well as a single unicorn-like horn emerging from its head, all mounted on a slab base. A mesmerizing figure, extraordinary for its lively modeling and bizarre hybridity, believed to appear upon the passing or arrival of a revered leader, interpreted as a good omen of peace and prosperity. Size: 8.125" W x 21.875" H (20.6 cm x 55.6 cm)
Figures like this example capture the ancient Chinese interest in the spirit world in which such fantastical creatures were believed to reside. Such mythological beings were thought to be at once protective and somewhat auspicious. As objects they were perceived as guardian figures; hence, it is possible that the piece was once placed in a garden or entrance to a domicile and later placed in the grave of an elite individual with significant objects to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. It is also possible that it was created strictly for burial with the deceased.
Provenance: Ex-private Thousand Oaks, CA collection; TL test confirms dating to ca. 600 to 900 CE. A document certifying the thermoluminescence test will be provided with the item.
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
