Description
Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine pair of 24 karat gold hoop earrings, each nearly circular with two incised striations adorning the lower end and a looped catch. Believe it or not, the Romans invented the “hoop earring” which developed around 300 BCE. Hoop earrings on occasion were ornamented with finials representing animals, Maenads, slaves, or the Greek god Eros. These earrings may represent a stylized coiling snake which symbolized immortality and was a popular Roman motif. Weight: 9.1 grams Size: each ~ .75" L x .625" W (1.9 cm x 1.6 cm)
