Painting , Oil/canvas , 43 cm x 53 cm, Oil on canvas Presumably Germany, around 1960 Attributed to Arnold Balwé (1898-1983) – German painter Dimensions: 43 cm x 53 cm, Good condition, Provenance: private collector, Balwé was one of the most famous students of the Munich Secession painter Karl Caspar; the auction record for a large-scale painting by Arnold Balwé currently sets at around €60,000Arnold Balwé’s oeuvre is characterized by post-impressionist landscapes, still life compositions and floral motifs painted with bright colors and impasto brushwork. The present small-format painting is attributed to the artist and depicts a southern townscape with an ascending road and brightly plastered houses. The composition corresponds to Balwé’s dynamic style and shows an unusual use of perspective, as also often seen in the artist’s works. The signed painting is in good condition considering its age. The paint surface shows light areas of craquelure, especially in the upper half. The stretcher measures 43 cm x 53 cm.Arnold Balwé (1898-1983)Born in Dresden, Arnold Balwé grew up as the son of a Dutch Consul in South Africa. He received his artistic training at the Academy of Arts in Munich, between 1922 and 1927. Since 1928, Balwé was regularly included in exhibitions of the New Secession in Munich and the Rheinische Secession in Dusseldorf. Later, he had further presentations at the Lenbachhaus and the Haus der Kunst in Munich. Balwé lived and worked in the area of lake Chiemsee, but he often went on study trips throughout Europe. (cbo)
