Sir Walter Scott. The Waverley Novels. New York: The Caxton Society, [circa 1910]. Extra-Illustrated edition, limited to twelve sets, of which this is number three, one-page autograph letter, signed, by Scott, addressed to Archibald Constable, Esq., and dated 1807, inserted into first volume. Complete in fifty-one quarto volumes. Grangerized, with three inserted frontispieces per volume, of which thirty-seven are a watercolored pen and ink sketch, nineteen by H. C. Green, seventeen by P. Valois, one unsigned, all others hand-colored engravings; tissue guards; full-page and intertextual illustrations throughout. Original laminated autumnal-leaf goat, elaborately decorated in gilt, boards with central armorial device and thistle devices to corners, spine with four raised bands, compartments lettered or stamped in gilt; all edges gilt; turn-ins ruled in gilt with repeating thistle device, white goat doublures repeating armorial device; dark purplish-red watered silk free endpapers. Boards showing occasional minor wear, few volumes with larger scuff; top edges of several volumes bumped, breaking surface of volumes forty through forty-two; several joints tender, some starting, most to middle-third of the volumes.
