Description
Giovanni-Francesco Straparola. Le Piacevoli Notti. Nelle quali si contengono le fauole con i loro enimmi da dieci donne. [Venice: Per Comin da Trino di Monferrato], 1551. Early edition, possibly following one dated 1550 though published in 1551, of the first volume of The Facetious Nights of Straparola (second volume published two years later), an influential collection of fairy tales structured after the Decameron, containing early iterations of "Puss-in-Boots" and "Beauty and the Beast." Small octavo. 186, [2] leaves. Italic type, historiated initials. Later vellum, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine in six compartments, five ruled and stamped in gilt, other with dark red morocco gilt-lettered label, raised bands. Hinges and spine ends repaired, new endpapers. Right margin of title-page chipped, not effecting text; text-block fore-edge lightly soiled with some minor insect damage; only occasional marginal wear or discoloration, leaves still quite bright. Boards only slightly bowed; vellum rubbed with light soiling. Very good.
