Description
[Franklin D. Roosevelt]. Thomas Hunt. A Historical Sketch of the Town of Clermont. Hudson, NY: The Hudson Press, 1928. First edition, inscribed by Franklin Roosevelt to his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt: "To my wife / Anna Eleanor Roosevelt / descendant of the Chancellor / and reared on these acres, / From Franklin D. Roosevelt," on the front free endpaper. Octavo. Frontispiece map of Columbia County, folding map in the rear, and two-page map. Illustrated throughout with photographs of homes, maps and historical figures. Linen back over gray boards, paper spine label wanting. Boards and backstrip slightly soiled, with larger stain on rear board. Ink notes to top margin of page 85. Two-page map with a couple small stains. Minor edge tears and thumb soiling. Altogether, a very handsome copy with a wonderful, personal inscription. Very good. Housed in a cloth chemise and brown morocco book-back slipcase.

Eleanor Roosevelt was an indirect descendent of the Chancellor (Robert R. Livingston [1746-1813]) that FDR declares her antecedent in his inscription. Mrs. Roosevelt was the great great granddaughter of Philip Livingston, one of the Chancellor's brothers. Robert R. Livingston was Chancellor of the State of New York from 1777-1801.
