Description
White marble stele of two Buddha's or bodhisattvas with a zitan wood stand used for Cai Zhe Fu worship, from the Northern Qi dynasty. This marble carving has a rectangular base, from which two bodhisattvas stand. Behind them is a tall, pointed mandorla. It appears to have been painted but most of the paint has worn off. Calligraphy is inscribed on the sides and back of the rectangular base. It has a lotus form zitan base that is also inscribed with calligraphy.
Dimensions for the carving are 4 inches wide by 9 inches high. The stand is 4 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/4 inches high. All measurements are approximate.
Provenance: From a Boston estate. Collected in Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s.
