He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1894 and settled in St Paul, Minnesota. After opening his first studio there in 1903, he taught portrait and landscape painting, and did portraits of senators, politicians, and the social elite, including James Hill, the railroad tycoon. DuVannes moved to New York City in 1910 and established a studio and gallery. While based in New York City, he traveled throughout the United States. On several occasions he spent time in California where he painted with artists Will Foster and Benton Scott. Eventually he preferred dealing in the works of other artists rather than his own. His son, Armand, opened a branch of the gallery in Los Angeles in 1938 and it continues today as Adamson-Duvannes Galleries. DuVannes retired to Naples and died there in 1962. Primarily an Impressionist, he also painted the American landscape in the manner of the Barbizon School.
