Description
Designed by Charles Smyth - Made by Henry C. Hart Company Detroit, Michigan - Circa 1898 This rare and unusual bank represents one of the most fascinating optical toys of the period. A child is asked to peer thru a lens and view the world at hand. Everything appears normal in the view finder. Now, an adult presents a penny that appears to directly cut off and block the view thru the lens. Once again, the child is asked to look into the lens. Miraculously, they exclaim that they still see everything in front of them, as if a magic x-ray permits them to look directly through the coin. This defies all logic and they demand to know how this is possible. The trick is achieved by four internally angled mirrors that create a double periscope formation. Ingenious. This may be the finest condition specimen to ever be discovered. Materials: Cast Iron and Glass Mirrors
